Ice time is limited. Development doesn't have to be.
Most U12–U14 players get a few hours of ice a week. The players who separate themselves are the ones who use the other 160 hours well. This is the Development Stage of the OHP pathway: six units, released one per month from September through February — honest self-assessment, goals that stick, a weekly plan that fits school and family life, real fueling habits, an off-ice engine and daily puck touches, and the mental skills to bring it all to the rink. Every player is also paired with a mentor — a current OHP Head Coach — who meets with them each month to review the work and their recent stretch of play. It isn't another camp or clinic; it's the education and support layer that wraps around your child's team and coaching.
Coach-Led Video Lessons
Short, straight-talk videos from OHP coaches — what coaches actually look for, explained in minutes, not hours.
Workbooks That Get Used
Printable self-assessments, goal sheets, and weekly blueprints — players fill them out, parents see the plan.
A Mentor in Their Corner
Every player is paired with a current OHP Head Coach for a monthly one-on-one check-in — accountability, encouragement, and honest answers.
Built by coaches who've lived it
Ohio Hockey Project is Cleveland's original skill development organization, founded in 2008 by Russ Sinkewich — AAA hockey with the Cleveland Americans, NCAA Division I at Bowling Green, and a seven-year pro career including the AHL's Cleveland Monsters. The OHP staff carries more than 85 combined years of professional, collegiate, and junior playing experience, with alumni who've gone on to the NHL, AHL, and NCAA. This curriculum is that staff's answer to a pattern they kept seeing: talented players separated in the end not by skill, but by the habits, mindset, and navigation nobody had structurally taught them.
Lauren Bernard — Development Mentor
A two-time NCAA national champion at Ohio State (2022, 2024) and a Team USA U18 Worlds silver medalist, Lauren plays professionally for the PWHL's New York Sirens — which means your player gets a mentor who is living the exact pathway this curriculum teaches, in real time. She leads OHP's skill instruction and brings a defender's honesty to every check-in: clear standards, real encouragement, no shortcuts.
Shannon Szabados — Development Mentor
One of the most decorated goaltenders in women's hockey history: two Olympic gold medals (2010, 2014), Olympic silver (2018), and IIHF Goaltender of the Decade. Shannon is also the first and only woman to record a shutout in men's professional hockey in North America. She leads OHP's goaltending and girls programs — and shows every young player in this program exactly how far the pathway can go.

Fueling Performance — habit- and timing-based nutrition and hydration. Off-Ice Training & Skill Development — safe at-home training plus daily skill work. Mental Skills — confidence, handling pressure and mistakes, and a pre-game routine.
